TAKES AN UPRISING

A Memoir in Lesbian Parables

Not until nearly three decades into my life could I begin living as my complete self. My journey out of those early years from shame into pride and defiance evolved the way people often come into our own, through movements for social change.

OutLoud Radio & Intergenerational Storytelling Projectoutloud radio

For over 5 years, I co-facilitated workshops bringing together LGBTQ youth and elders. Such a blessing this time spent with youth who shared stories of their lives and filled me with hope and delight.

OutLoud Radio increases the well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer young people by helping them develop the skills and confidence to decide for themselves how they will be represented, advance social justice and make the most of their lives.  OutLoud Radio’s Facebook Page

Youth Radio  Founded in 1993 in Berkeley during a period of heightened youth violence and homicide, Youth Radio was established as an outlet for Bay Area youth to process their experiences and provide an alternative perspective to the prevailing media dialogue. In 2007, Youth Radio moved its headquarters to downtown Oakland, helping transform an under-invested part of the city into a world-class center of art, commerce, and culture.

Youth Radio operates bureaus in Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Washington, DC.

Aunt Lute Books

Aunt Lute Books is a nonprofit multicultural women’s press based in San Francisco. For nearly thirty years, we have been publishing literature that voices the perspectives of women from a broad range of communities.

Aunt Lute Books is dedicated to publishing literature by women whose voices have been traditionally underrepresented in mainstream and small press publishing. Since 1982, Aunt Lute Books has published books that incorporate the histories and lives of women whose stories often go untold. Our aim is to distribute literature that expresses the true complexity of women’s lives and the possibilities for personal and social change.

Our latest project is called A Simple Revolution: Community Dialogue with Judy Grahn. This project hopes to build understanding about—and community around—the history and legacy of the Bay Area lesbian movement.

Judy Grahn – poet, writer, and social theorist

Judy Grahn and her writings embody all we strived for in making a movement of lesbians- women loving women in the ‘70s, and her words continue…
